Another one bites the dust...

Broadway Baptist Church just got voted off the Southern Baptist island. With no argument. Through I think the Southern Baptist Convention is evil and this decision reflects their near consensus of hatred towards gays, from what little I know about the situation, I have little sympathy for this church at this point. They should have pulled the plug on the SBC long before the SBC pulled the plug on them.

//Article III of the SBC’s constitution notes that “churches not in cooperation with the convention are churches which act to affirm, approve or endorse homosexual behavior.”//

I'm amazed that they felt they needed to make this part of their constitution. Do they do the same with every other activity they consider sinful? Must SBC churches call gossips, or remarried divorcees, or grudge holders to repentance and exclude them from membership if the do not amend their lives?

wow..... this is actually the most humorous thing i've heard in a while. It seems comical to me that Christians are excluding another Christian church for welcoming homosexual members.

How does the SBC make any sense of the hundreds of bible passges that value inclusion over ritual purity, and grace over judgment? They must have skipped over the entire old testament and then proceeded to skip the gospel and simply read pauls epistles... speicifcally Romans and corinthians...

it seems to me that a truly christian church would not only have homosexual members, but seek such members out, not because they are sinners, but instead because they are the outsider. One cannot honestly read the gospel and profphets without coming accross the notion that the lowly, the outcst, the reprobate, that these are what the kingdom of God is based off of...

if the SBC wants to reject a church who marginally supports gays, they only further seperate themselves frm the kingdom of God.

but honestly, wtf? people are seriously crazy...

even broadway wanted to make it evident that they 'did not support homosexual behavior'--so what if you do!

If Jesus were here he would flip some mother fucking tables over

I appreciate your comment that Broadway should have left the SBC a long time ago, but one does not easily break off a 127 year relationship. BBC has sougt to have the fruit of the Spirit in this matter: longsuffering, patience, kindness, etc.

What we have tried to do is hold our own inclusive stance while at the same time bringing the SBC along to a more open position on inclusiveness. Such an effort is what followers of Christ try to do. Jesus was sad and angry about the hypocrisy and moral compromise of his religious institution, but he always remained a part of it.

Our homosexual members have sought to embody this Christlikeness also, a very important witness to me.

Charlie,

I appreciate your commenting here and your concerned tone. Perhaps my language in this post was a bit strong and reflected my anger at the situation at the time. Truly it was not Broadway but the SBC who has acted foolishly in this matter. I just suppose I would rather see churches excommunicated as a result of actual bold statements affirming gays and lesbians rather than mere suspicion and presumption!
